Horizontal Situation Indicator

The Horizontal Situation Indicator (HSI) displays a rotating compass card in a heading-up orientation at the bottom of the PFW. Letters indicate the cardinal points and numeric labels occur every 30˚. Major tick marks are at 10˚ intervals and minor tick marks at 5˚ intervals. A digital reading of the current heading appears on top of the HSI, and the current track is represented on the HSI by a magenta diamond bug. The HSI also presents turn rate, course deviation, bearing, and navigation source information and is available in three formats (Basic, HSI Map, and Traffic). The Selected Heading is displayed as a datafield button to the top left of the HSI. The cyan bug on the compass rose corresponds to the Selected Heading and if it is beyond the visible portion of the compass rose, the Selected Heading Bug will appear at the edge of the HSI. The Desired Track (DTK) is shown in magenta to the upper right of the HSI when the selected navigation source is FMS. The Selected Course (CRS) is shown to the upper right of the HSI in cyan when the selected navigation source is VOR or LOC.

The HSI contains a Course Deviation Indicator (CDI), with a Course Pointer, To/From Indicator, and a sliding Deviation Bar and Scale. The Course Pointer is a single line arrow (FMS, VOR1, and LOC1) or a double line arrow (VOR2 and LOC2) which points in the direction of the set course. The To/From Indicator rotates with the Course Pointer and is displayed when the active NAVAID is received. Above the HSI a sliding deviation indicator incorporating a deviation scale and a To/From indication is displayed. If a navigation aid fails and the system enters dead reckoning mode "DR" will be annunciated inside the HSI. If the aircraft deviates from course a distance greater than the RNP value (full scale CDI deflection), a cross track error (XTK) will be annunciated at the bottom of the HSI displaying the current distance from the flight plan/VOR/LOC course.

The Current Track Indicator, represented by a white diamond on the HSI, is the current over the ground track the aircraft is flying.

Navigation angles (track, heading, course, bearing) are corrected automatically to the computed magnetic variation (Mag Var), or referenced to true north (T), or User (U). The ‘User’ Navigation Angle allows the pilot to enter a custom magnetic variance. When an approach referenced to true north has been loaded into the flight plan, the system generates a message to change the navigation angle setting to True at the appropriate time.
