Glide Range Ring and Bearing to a Glide Range Airport
The following section describes the map overlay setting for a glide range ring and bearing to a glide range airport. Displaying the glide range ring and bearing to a glide range airport may be done independent of or in conjunction with activating Smart Glide™.
A glide range ring and bearing to a glide range airport can be displayed on the map. When the Glide Range is enabled in the map settings, and the aircraft is at or above 1000’ AGL, both the glide range ring and the system-selected glide range airport bearing information can be displayed.
Always consider enabling the glide range airport display (cyan chevrons) and ensure the map settings for airports and airport map range are sufficiently set in order to promptly identify the system-selected glide range airport on the map display.
The glide range ring appears as an irregularly shaped cyan polygon around the aircraft and represents how far the aircraft can glide before reaching 1000’ AGL under an optimal aircraft glide configuration. Altitude, winds, turning factors, and terrain will change the size and shape of the ring. When the glide range ring is not using datalink forecast winds in its calculation, it will be annunciated on each map. Refer to the Hazard Avoidance Section for information on forecast winds.
The system will utilize the optimal glide range indicated airspeed at a zero flap setting as one factor in glide range calculations. Reference the current pertinent flight manual for the aircraft glide airspeed.
The aircraft will always be displayed inside the Glide Range Ring, regardless of extreme winds higher than the aircraft’s optimal glide range airspeed.
Bearing information will be provided on the map display toward a suitable, system-selected airport when Glide Range is enabled and ‘Ring & Glide’ is selected in the map settings. Bearing information will appear as a cyan dashed line of chevrons from the aircraft ownship icon to the system-selected glide range airport. Additionally, the system-selected glide range airport is a selectable option for the HSI bearing pointer by selecting the 'Best' option under 'Bearing Pointers' in the 'PFD Settings' menu. This option is always available when Smart Glide is configured, regardless of the glide range map settings. For more information on HSI bearing pointers, see the Flight Instruments Section.
