Holding Patterns in the Flight Plan

If a hold is required to be inserted on a waypoint in the Approach that is also included in the Missed Approach Procedure with a HOLD associated to it in the Missed Approach, then the system will always default to the Missed Approach HOLD. A HOLD can be inserted in the approach section of the procedure by using the Pilot Defined Hold and not the Published Hold option.

Holding pattern geometry is calculated using current ground speed. If the aircraft is above the future hold altitude, the calculated holding pattern may be larger than required. Performance management calculations for ETE and Fuel Remaining at the hold exit point will be affected, resulting in longer than expected ETE and less predicted fuel remaining.

A pilot-defined holding pattern can be created at any flight plan waypoint, at the aircraft present position, or at a direct-to waypoint. A published holding pattern can be entered into the flight plan if a published hold is available for the selected flight plan waypoint. Settings for the hold will be automatically selected based on the parameters of the published hold. If the pilot chooses to change any settings for the published hold, a pilot-defined holding pattern shall be entered instead. Holding patterns inserted at a flight plan waypoint are retained as part of the flight plan when storing an active or standby flight plan.

A hold-timer is displayed in the "Active-To" banner beneath the HSI when the aircraft is in a pilot-defined or published timed hold (a distance-based hold will not display this timer). This timer counts up from zero once the aircraft is established on the inbound path. When the To/From indication flips to "To" (the aircraft is abeam the holding waypoint) and the outbound leg begins, the timer will begin to count up again from zero. This count up timer is intended to decrease workload and increase situational awareness while holding.

When the selected waypoint is intersected by an airway, the quadrant (N, NE, NW, S, SE, etc) and airway shall be entered when loading the hold. When the selected waypoint is a part of a published hold, the setting shall be presented as '[Quadrant] as published'. Otherwise, the type of hold will be pilot-defined.

The system automatically enters SUSP Mode and suspends waypoint sequencing of a flight plan when crossing the HOLD waypoint. Once the hold is active, the system will remain in SUSP Mode until the pilot disables SUSP Mode, or uses the Exit Hold function, at which point guidance along the hold to the inbound course is provided and automatic waypoint sequencing is resumed. Refer to the SUSP Mode portion of the Flight Management section for more information.

Published holds that are part of an instrument procedure (departure, arrival, approach) shall be inserted in the flight plan when loading the procedure. See the Procedures portion later in this Flight Management Section for more information on loading procedures.
