If a 116C/NC fails and navigation reverts to a 116B, do not use the approach information provided by the internal navigation of the GDU™ 116B (VFR only) as a means of navigating any instrument approach. The consumer GPS provided in the GDU 116B AXIS™ flight display does not provide IFR qualified GPS data and is not suitable for IMC flight. These waypoints and associated course lines are made available for monitoring purposes only.
IFR external navigation may only be used if the CDI Source on the PFD is synced to the external navigation source.
No approach vertical guidance will be provided for published instrument procedures when loaded into the GDU 116B AXIS flight display.
If unsure whether or not your system uses an RS 232 connection for external GPS navigators contact your dealer or Garmin Product Support for clarification.
The 116B GDU internal GPS flight plan is for VFR use only.
The system can access departures, arrivals, and approaches that are stored within the database. Procedures can be added to the active or stored flight plans.
Whenever an approach, departure, or arrival procedure is loaded into the Active Flight Plan, a set of approach, departure, or arrival waypoints are inserted into the flight plan along with a header row identifying the procedure the pilot selected. The original enroute portion of the flight plan remains active when the procedure is loaded.
The system adds procedures to the flight plan based on the leg types coded within that procedure in the navigation database. Over twenty types of legs are possible in terminal area procedures, such as DME Arc to a Fix, course to a VOR radial, hold in lieu of a procedure turn, vector (heading) to an altitude. The system offers lines of text on each waypoint button to help identify each leg type in the selected procedure. The text provided will vary depending on the leg type and other attributes that are specified as part of the leg.
