An external navigation source is not required to receive Vertical Navigation (VNAV) indications. When the VNAV profile is defined, the pilot is informed of the progress by message alerts below the HSI. The Vertical Deviation Indicator (VDI) appears to the left of the Altimeter and is displayed with a magenta ‘V’ at the top of the scale accompanied by a magenta chevron indicating the VNAV vertical deviation. A Required Vertical Speed Indicator (RVSI) is displayed as a magenta chevron on the VSI indicating the required vertical speed to reach the target altitude, which is displayed above the altitude bug datafield button. The VDI and RVSI appear in conjunction with the 'TOD within 1 minute'. The VDI and RVSI are removed from the display if vertical deviation becomes invalid.

Vertical navigation indications will transition to approach indications if the approach is activated in the flight plan. If no approach is loaded, the vertical navigation will terminate at the Final Approach Fix.
