Lateral navigation along the Active Flight Plan shall be displayed and can be supplied to the Flight Director (FD). Active and upcoming flight plan legs are displayed on maps and in the Active Flight Plan. The system displays a calculated turn anticipation arc, and can display guidance to follow the arc. When the aircraft reaches the beginning of the arc, the guidance will prompt a turn, and the course pointer and desired track will indicate the course for the next flight plan leg. The CDI will indicate the cross track error relative to the arc for the duration of the turn. The flight plan leg will sequence to the next leg at the apex of the arc, indicated by the To/From Indicator momentarily switching to From, and the displayed FMS information updating to the new active leg. If the active FD mode is sourcing the FMS for use, the FD will follow the displayed guidance.

Components in the flight plan shall be displayed in magenta when part of the active leg or active VNAV waypoint, cyan when designated for upcoming guidance, or white when considered advisory (not used for active guidance and not designated for upcoming guidance). See the AFCS Section for information regarding lateral and vertical FD Modes for active and upcoming guidance.

The system shall also calculate a vertical profile considering all waypoints/legs and constraints in the flight plan, and current aircraft conditions to calculated a vertical profile. Vertical navigation (VNAV) complying with constraints in the Active Flight Plan as well as VNAV direct-to navigation can be supplied to the FD. VNAV guidance is based on barometric altitudes, not on GPS altitude.

Amber text in the flight plan indicates a constraint in the vertical profile is unattainable due to current aircraft performance. A constraint that is crossed in the flight plan indicates the system has determined this constraint to be invalid based on aircraft limitations or logical sequencing of the constraint within the flight plan. Constraint validity is continuously monitored and may be adjusted by the system as the flight progresses.

VNAV guidance may include the active VNAV waypoint identifier, Target Altitude, VS Required, Top of Descent (TOD), Bottom of Descent (BOD), and descent vertical deviation. The VNAV guidance to be displayed depends upon VNAV profile parameters (such as FPA), and aircraft location relative to the VNAV profile. The VNAV guidance will also provide a Vertical Track Tone when the aircraft is within one minute of reaching a BOD or TOD perimeter.
