'Map' and Other Map Displays

The MFW 'Map' Window serves as the primary map viewer for the system. The 'Map' Window displays relevant flight data in a manner that maximizes situational awareness for the flight crew by defaulting to a view fixed on the aircraft's present position.

An aircraft icon is placed on the map display at the location corresponding to the calculated present position. The aircraft position and the flight plan legs are accurately based on GPS calculations as they correspond to system database values. The basemap layer upon which these are placed are from a source with less resolution, therefore the relative position of the aircraft to map items may not be exact. Hereafter, references to 'Map' imply the 'Map' Page on the MFW, while "map display(s)" implies 'Map' and all other maps capable of displaying aviation or flight plan data.

Map data displayed on the various map displays is highly customizable, giving the flight crew options to tailor the map to show or hide map features for desired focus on relevant map data, as well as decluttering and other situational awareness considerations.

Map features can generally be divided into four categories:

  • Aviation Data - airports, VOR's, airways, airspaces

  • Terrain Data - map shading indicating elevation

  • Geographical Data - cities, lakes, highways, political borders, etc.

  • Hazard Data - traffic, hazardous terrain, weather, obstacles, etc.

The amount of displayed data can be adjusted based on the selected map settings, detail level, and range. 'Map' can be oriented three different ways: North Up, Track Up, and Heading (HDG) Up.

Some FMS Apps can display an inset or preview of its related map (e.g., Active Flight Plan Map, Departure Preview Map). Aviation data and flight plan data may also be viewed on the MFW elsewhere, such as 'Terrain' or 'Weather'.

A smaller version of 'Map' may be displayed on the PFW as the HSI Map and will display flight management information, supplementing the information on the MFW Map. Refer to the HSI Map section in Flight Instruments for more information.
