Marking the New Year With a Garmin®

GPS III® AT Y2K

The GPS III® Plus on the Stroke of Midnight

I thought you might enjoy seeing the flash photo I took — on the stroke of midnight — to commemorate the arrival of the year 2000. This was at the Furnace Creek campground in Death Valley National Park, California. From another happy Garmin customer.

Cruising the New Millennium with the GPS 12Map

I purchased my GPS 12MAP to take with me on a millennium cruise. This wasn't just any millennium cruise, but a cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's "Legend of the Seas" that hovered by the International Dateline so we could be the first in the world to celebrate the new year, and then crossed it the next evening so that we could be the last in the world to celebrate it. With my 12MAP, I verified that Capt. Bengt Ronson steered us to "within inches" of the dateline each evening. The dateline is 172° 30'. Our coordinates at 12:00.03am 1/1/2000: S 39° 28.331' W 172° 39.977'. Our coordinates after partying all day and then crossing the dateline (heading east) at 12:00.15am on 1/1/2000 again: S 39° 29.819' W 172° 20.010'. There were about 20 people on the ship with GPS units, but none with a 12MAP. Those that saw the map detail from MapSource® WorldMap with our positions entered as waypoints were more than envious of this unit and most said they would be selling their old units and upgrading to the 12MAP as soon as they got home! It was nice being 9,594 miles away from home, but now it's time to get back to work!
