A few friends and I make a trip each spring to Leech Lake, Minnesota, for the walleye opener. After returning from a rough day on the lake (big winds with 4+ foot waves, as the lake is over 12 miles across at points), we heard that some men from another cabin had lost a boat off Bear Island, about 7 miles out from our cabin. They apparently hit some rocks and the boat was swamped.

Deciding that we were bigger men than they were, we decided to head out and find the boat, tow it off the rocks, bail the water out, and return home as the heroes. Unfortunately, we swamped our boat within 2 minutes of the "rescue." Luckily, I had my cell phone in a zip-lock bag and had purchased an eTrex earlier that day. We all ended up in the water, and the eTrex worked like a champ once we were on shore.

We had to travel approximately two miles across the island to be picked up. One of the men I was with lived on the lake, and claimed to know Bear Island like the back of his hand. After walking for about 45 minutes, I piped up and said that my GPS unit's track log showed that we had almost completed a circle, and despite the fact that he grew up on the lake, I don't think these units lie too much. In any event, we corrected our course and made it over to the leeward side of the island just after dark for our pickup. The eTrex continues to work like a champ today, and I've literally beat the heck out of it!

Thanks,
J.H.
