Mobile Off-board Navigation

Garmin Mobile is an easy-to-use navigation application that allows specified mobile handsets to function as versatile GPS navigators. It includes detailed maps and turn-by-turn directions making it easy to locate addresses anywhere in the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii) and Puerto Rico. Garmin Mobile embodies more than 17 years of experience and thousands of man years in GPS navigation, street level map/turn-by-turn database development, and an industry-acclaimed user interface which is shared across our entire line of mobile navigation solutions. All of the technology elements comprising Garmin Mobile were developed in-house with no dependence on 3rd party providers. This approach has allowed us to differentiate our application from competitive offerings in both features and value.

Garmin Mobile launched with select carriers on September 2005, after just 9 months of development, and was the first phone navigation application to visually depict and constantly update the user's position on a detailed moving map. In addition, Garmin Mobile 3.0 was the first phone navigation application to integrate real-time traffic information into it's routing and guidance algorithms. Users can easily navigate their way to the lowest fuel prices with current pricing from nearby gas stations, while avoiding traffic tie-ups with real-time traffic data, and check the current weather conditions and five-day forecasts.

Garmin Mobile offers a premium local search capability utilizing over six million points of interest (POIs), such as hotels, restaurants, shopping, and tourist attractions that are carefully scrubbed and spot verified by Garmin's in-house automotive cartography team to ensure relevance and accuracy. Our application enables automatic dialing capability allowing the user to conveniently make reservations, inquire about hours of operation, and shop for competitive pricing.

When the user selects a destination, Garmin Mobile automatically calculates the fastest route while incorporating current traffic conditions, and provides voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions to the destination. An easy-to-read text and turn arrow prompt help identify upcoming turns. If the customer inadvertently strays off course, Garmin Mobile will automatically calculate the quickest way to get back on track.

Garmin Mobile's text-to-speech functionality enables the handset to audibly announce the names of upcoming streets as part of the turn prompt, so the user can keep their eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic or tricky roadways. Our audio technology utilizes "phonemes" which assist the text to speech engine in the correct local pronunciation of roads and points of interest. For example, our audio technology will correctly pronounce the names of Switzer and Quivera, while our competitors will not. This technology not only improves the utility for the user, ultimately it contributes to a more satisfying experience.
