nüvi Features

Navigation:
Like Garmin’s latest generation of navigation devices, the nüvi’s introductory screen lists two familiar options: “Where to?” and “View map,” which offer the user Garmin’s very popular and easy-to-use GPS navigation functions. Travelers can use the nüvi to navigate to an address or search points of interest (POI’s) – places like hotels, restaurants, shopping, and tourist attractions. The nüvi automatically calculates the fastest route and provides voice-prompted turn-by-turn directions along the way. The unit is pre-loaded with complete maps of North America or Europe – with data furnished by NAVTEQ, a leading digital map provider.

Text-to-Speech:
nüvi audibly announces the name of upcoming streets – letting drivers keep their eyes on the road while navigating through busy traffic and tricky roadways. For example, instead of the usual “in one mile, turn right,” nüvi instructs, “in one mile, turn right on Main Street.”

FM TMC Traffic Information:
nüvi is compatible with Garmin’s GTM 10 and GTM 11 traffic receiver, which receives digital information (where available) on traffic, road construction, and weather-related tie-ups. The GTM 10 receives data from selected FM broadcast stations in select cities throughout the United States and Europe. This optional feature lets drivers see congested areas via a color-coded map. The nüvi uses this data to automatically calculate and suggest alternative routes based on the traffic information.

Garmin Language Guide™:
With data provided by Oxford University Press, this software suite contains a multilingual word bank, phrase bank, and five bilingual dictionaries. The multilingual word bank and phrase bank supports nine languages and dialects including American English, British English, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese, European Spanish, and Latin American Spanish. The Language Guide lets travelers look up and translate more than 17,000 words or 20,000 phrases per language. Through the unit’s text-to-speech interface, users can get a spoken pronunciation of each entry in the word bank – along with gender and part of speech information. The multilingual phrase bank is categorized by activity for ease of use. Sold separately on SD card for convenient loading into nüvi’s internal memory.

Garmin Travel Guide™:
Garmin will soon announce a partnership with a leading travel publisher to develop the U.S. Travel Guide for use with nüvi. This database gives users in-depth travel information – helpful and thorough reviews and recommendations for restaurants, hotels, shopping, nightlife, sporting events, and tourist attractions. Turn-by-turn directions to a selected location are then just a finger tap away. Partial or full European Travel Guides are available as well, with information provided by Marco Polo – one of Europe’s leading travel authorities.

Garmin Savers Guide™:
With information provided by Entertainment, travelers and locals alike can always be assured they’re getting the best deal on travel, dining, shopping, attractions, and services. Sold as an SD datacard with companion membership card, the Savers Guide lets you know where all the nearby discounts are – and guides you directly to them!

Audio Book Player:
The player is pre-loaded in the nüvi, and content is provided by Audible.com – featuring more than 70,000 hours of audio programs from more than 200 content partners.

MP3 Player:
Lets users browse music by artist, album, song, or genre – as well as the ability to build playlists. Loading music onto an SD card is “drag-and-drop” easy – no special software is required. Sample MP3s from AudioLunchBox.com are pre-loaded onto the unit.

Picture Viewer:
Displays standard jpeg photos and features slide show, thumbnail browser, and rotate functions.

World Travel Clock:
Convert your current time to any time zone around the world, and track the current time four cities at once.

Currency Converter, Measurement Converter, and Calculator:
Convert more than 150 currencies, with the ability to update the exchange rate as needed. Nüvi also converts area, speed, distance, temperature, and volume measurements between U.S. and metric systems.

Custom POI Database:
Import customized points of interest created by others with the help of Garmin's new POI Loader software. In today's fast-paced world, points of interest are ever-changing. With the help of POI Loader, you can now add your favorite new restaurant, or that supermarket having the grand opening, as points of interest (POIs) to your compatible Garmin GPS. The possibilities are endless — upload safety cameras or school zones, and you will receive a warning if you are traveling too fast. In addition, an optional proximity-alert feature notifies you of upcoming custom POIs.
