MarineUpdater

MarineUpdater is a Windows®-based computer application that works with a Garmin USB card reader, a Garmin data card, and an Internet connection to update the software on your fixed-mount marine devices. (See the list of supported products.)

Here’s how it works: Information from a fixed-mount marine device and any networked devices is saved to a data card. Connect the card to a computer, and MarineUpdater compares the information on the card to the latest marine device software available. It will download all updates to the data card. Next time you insert the data card into the fixed-mount marine device, it will automatically update the software on the device, and on all devices on its network.

It’s easy and it’s automatic. You don’t even have to know the model numbers or software versions of the marine products on your vessel. MarineUpdater takes care of all of the details for you.

If you have a Garmin USB card reader and a data card (other than a pre-programmed BlueChart® card), you can download MarineUpdater now.

To request a pre-programmed software update card, call (800) 800-1020. A deposit is required for the card. The deposit will be refunded when the card is returned.

MarineUpdater Requirements

• IBM-compatible computer running Windows 2000 or Windows XP
• Internet connection
• Garmin USB card reader with drivers installed
• 16 MB (or larger) data card

Cards used for data backups or programming of MapSource products can be used, but all existing information on the card will be erased. Pre-programmed BlueChart® cards cannot be used for software updates.

Step-by-step Instructions

1. Insert a data card into your marine device’s empty card slot.
2. Activate the “Prepare for software update” menu item or button (you may want to consult the owners manual for specific instructions on how to prepare the card). The data card will be re-programmed with information about that marine product and all other products which are connected to it or the marine network. Note: Marine devices using serial ports which are configured for NMEA will not be updated.
3. After the card is programmed, take the card out of the marine device and insert it into a Garmin USB card reader connected to a computer. Make sure the computer has MarineUpdater installed and an Internet connection.
4. Launch MarineUpdater on the computer.
5. Wait while MarineUpdater reads the information from your data card and checks for available updates.
6. Select the updates you want to download to the data card. You’ll be able to view a complete list of the changes the updates will make to your system.
7. With the updates on the data card, you can then insert the data card back into the marine device on your vessel. Follow any on-screen prompts to complete the software update.
