  2. Q. Can I load maps for my StreetPilot 2610/2650 to a microdrive card? If so, which brand should I use and do I need a card reader?

    A. The StreetPilot 2610/2650 is compatible with the IBM/Hitachi 1 GB microdrive. Detailed maps may be loaded to the 1 GB microdrive while it is in the unit?you do not need to purchase a separate card reader to download maps onto the microdrive. However, GS MagicStor microdrives are not compatible with the StreetPilot 2610/2650.

  4. Q. Can I upload and download waypoints, routes, and tracks between my computer and the StreetPilot 2610/2650?

    A. Waypoints, routes, and tracks may be uploaded and downloaded between the PC and the StreetPilot 2610/2650. However, the Street Pilot 2610/2650 does not have the capability to perform a Tracback along a previously recorded tracklog. Additionally, if you create a route on the PC and would like to activate this route without the StreetPilot 2610/2650 recalculating the route, you must first turn off the Automatic Route Recalculation feature. To turn this feature off, press the Menu button, select the Options icon, and choose the Guidance Tab. The first item on this tab is the Automatic Route Recalculation field. It can be configured to ensure the unit does not recalculate a route you have created on the PC.

  5. Q. Will updates be available for the map detail that's preloaded on the StreetPilot 2620?

    A. Map updates will be available to customers who purchase a StreetPilot 2620. The price of the update is $150. The information about these updates can be found at the following link: http://shop.garmin.com/cartography/mapsource/update/cd_update_details.asp?CD=010-10391-05

  6. Q. Is there currently extra space on the StreetPilot 2620's hard drive for additional maps?

    A. Yes. The amount of space available for additional maps will depend upon the version of City Navigator that is loaded to your StreetPilot 2620. City Navigator version 5.00 will leave approximately 500 MB and version 6.00 will leave approximately 300 MB available. The preloaded mapset cannot be overwritten using MapSource. MapSource will only load maps to the remaining space on the hard drive. This amount of space is subject to change as updates occur to the preloaded database.

  7. Q. What is a Waypoint?

    A. Waypoints are locations or landmarks worth recording and storing in your GPS. These are locations you may later want to return to. They may be check points on a route or significant ground features. (e.g., camp, the truck, a fork in a trail, or a favorite fishing spot).

Waypoints may be defined and stored in the unit manually, by taking coordinates for the waypoint from a map or other reference. This can be done before ever leaving home. Or more usually, waypoints may be entered directly by taking a reading with the unit at the location itself, giving it a name, and then saving the point.

Waypoints may also be put into the unit by referencing another waypoint already stored, giving the reference waypoint, and entering the distance and compass bearing to the new waypoint.

  8. Q. What is WAAS?

    A. WAAS stands for the "Wide Area Augmentation System".

WAAS is an FAA-funded project designed to improve the overall accuracy and integrity of GPS signals for flying in instrument meteorological conditions, primarily during the approach and landing phases of flight. It is a space-based system that broadcasts integrity information and correction data as determined by ground reference stations. At this time, the system is still in the development stage. The goal is to provide reliable signals with an accuracy of seven meters (21-22 ft), both horizontally and vertically, 95+% of the time. Current tests show the actual accuracy to be on the order of 2-3 meters. See http://gps.faa.gov/Programs/WAAS/waas.htm for more information.

For those GPS units that are WAAS enabled, a second antenna is not necessary to receive the signal.

  9. Q. What is the largest CF card or microdrive the StreetPilot 2610 will accept? Will I be able to download the entire volume of North American City Navigator v5 onto this data card?

    A. Using a compatible 2 GB CF card, you may download the entire volume of North American City Navigator (1050 maps at almost 1.5 GB). The StreetPilot 2610/2650 is compatible with the IBM/Hitachi microdrive 1 GB card. However, the StreetPilot 2610/2650 is not compatible with MagicStore microdrives or the Hitachi 2 GB and 4 GB microdrives.

  11. Q. Is the StreetPilot 2610/2650 capable of sending or receiving NMEA data?

    A. StreetPilot 2650 is capable of sending and receiving NMEA data. You'll need to purchase a serial interface cable (available for sale as an accessory from our Online Store). This power/data cable will connect the StreetPilot 2650 to a serial port. It will provide power, and speed and backlight sensors.

  13. Q. Can I use the "external speaker with 12/24V adapter" power cable and PC interface cable from my StreetPilot III as a backup to those included with the StreetPilot 2610/2650?

    A. The external speaker/power cable and the PC interface cable that are used for the StreetPilot III are not the same as what's used for the StreetPilot 2610/2650. The StreetPilot 2610/2650 utilizes a USB PC interface while the StreetPilot III uses a serial PC interface. The StreetPilot 2610/2650 external speaker/power cable has been redesigned to accommodate the addition of speed and reverse light sensor data when used with a StreetPilot 2650.

  14. Q. Is the StreetPilot 2620 just a StreetPilot 2610 with a GS MagicStor CF hard drive?

    A. While the StreetPilot 2620 and StreetPilot 2610 have the same look and firmware update package, their internal hardware is different and the firmware behaves differently. Additionally, the hard drive shipped in the StreetPilot 2620 has specially enhanced firmware that makes it better suited for our application. The standard GS MagicStor or other hard drive available through normal retail distribution does not have these enhancements and, hence, may cause interference and will not work reliably with Garmin's StreetPilot 2610 or 2620. Use of hard drives that are not approved by Garmin may cause damage to the drive or the unit and, hence, void the warranty.
