Q. What are the differences between the GPS V and the StreetPilot III?
A. Although the GPS V and StreetPilot III both provide autorouting capabilities, there are many other important similarities and differences between these units.
The StreetPilot III utilizes a proprietary, removable flash data card that is available in 8 to 128 MB to store detailed maps. The GPS V uses internal flash memory (19 MB) for the same purpose. Both units come with detailed street-level mapping software (MapSource City Navigator for the StreetPilot III and MapSource City Select for the GSP V) which allows you to view mapping detail on your computer, real-time track, mark waypoints, view track logs, select and download maps, and much more. Both units are also equipped with built-in, permanent basemaps that cannot be altered. These basemaps come in a variety of global designations (i.e., Atlantic basemap). Please see your local dealer when purchasing a Garmin mapping unit to ensure that you purchase one with a basemap that's appropriate for your location and needs. Factory-installed basemaps cannot be altered.
The StreetPilot III and GPS V are both designed as portable GPS solutions for your automobile, motorcycle, RV, etc. Because of its compact size and additional navigation features, the GPS V can also be used as a handheld device. Both units are able to be powered using external power through a cigarette lighter adapter or, in the case of the GPS V, a bare wire power/data cable. Batteries may also be used to power these devices. The StreetPilot III requires 6 AA batteries and has a battery life of 2-20 hours depending on the use of navigation features and the backlight. The cigarette lighter adapter for the StreetPilot III also serves as a speaker and provides audible directions as you navigate to your destination. The GPS V requires 4 AA batteries and has a battery life of 25 hours. It does not provide audible directions.
The StreetPilot III has a larger, 16-color LCD display measuring 1.8 x 3.4 inches. The GPS V has a black and white, 4-level grey LCD measuring 2.2 x 1.5 inches. The GPS V's screen can be configured for and either vertical or horizontal orientation.

When calling technical support, please have available the serial number of the unit, the return shipping address, and a daytime telephone number. A Product Support Specialist will provide you with a Return Material Authorization tracking number (RMA#) and shipping instructions.

A. You may interface your GPS unit with up to three external devices at the same time provided the versions of NMEA streamed by the GPS are compatible with the external device. To determine the versions of NMEA output by your GPS unit, refer to the product's owner's manual. This information is usually found near the back of the manual, just before the index.

Q. Can I use MapSource US Topo or MapSource BlueChart with the GPS V or STP III?
A. While MapSource BlueChart and US Topo is not compatible with the STP III, the GPS V is compatible with BlueChart and US Topo given limited capability. "Limited capability" may mean that a unit may be able to draw all the map features from the MapSource software, such as roads, lakes, nav-aids, depth contours, wrecks, etc., but the interactive capability of the maps may be limited. For example, you may not be able to "find nearest marinas" or look up additional text about a specific mapping feature.

A. All Garmin GPS manuals will list the NMEA version (some units output more than one version) for that particular unit. Generally, this information is found in the back of the manual, just before the index.

Q. Can I use Loran TD coordinates on my Garmin GPS?
A. Garmin has added the Loran TD format to most new GPS units. This will allow consumers who have used Loran in the past to enter their old Loran TD numbers into their new Garmin GPS receivers. The GPS does not receive a Loran signal. It will simply convert the Loran TD that you enter and convert it to Lat/Lon for display or navigation. You will need to know the Loran chain number and the two secondary towers used to record the position you wish to convert to Lat/Lon or navigate to. Once you have set up your GPS for Loran TDs, you will be able to enter your Loran TD positions. You can then switch the GPS back to Lat/Lon, and the coordinates will be converted. Since the GPS unit makes the conversion based on a static model, there may be error introduced. You can also get error if an incorrect primary/secondary station is used or the order of if the two secondary stations is incorrect. Because of this error, we recommended you mark these waypoints upon arrival, this time using the GPS signals received for the most accurate position.

Q. What is a Waypoint?
A. Waypoints are locations or landmarks worth recording and storing in your GPS. These are locations you may later want to return to. They may be check points on a route or significant ground features. (e.g., camp, the truck, a fork in a trail, or a favorite fishing spot).
Waypoints may be defined and stored in the unit manually, by taking coordinates for the waypoint from a map or other reference. This can be done before ever leaving home. Or more usually, waypoints may be entered directly by taking a reading with the unit at the location itself, giving it a name, and then saving the point.
Waypoints may also be put into the unit by referencing another waypoint already stored, giving the reference waypoint, and entering the distance and compass bearing to the new waypoint.

Q. What is WAAS?
A. WAAS stands for the "Wide Area Augmentation System".
WAAS is an FAA-funded project designed to improve the overall accuracy and integrity of GPS signals for flying in instrument meteorological conditions, primarily during the approach and landing phases of flight. It is a space-based system that broadcasts integrity information and correction data as determined by ground reference stations. At this time, the system is still in the development stage. The goal is to provide reliable signals with an accuracy of seven meters (21-22 ft), both horizontally and vertically, 95+% of the time. For those GPS units that are WAAS enabled, a second antenna is not necessary to receive the signal.
