Garmin's Geko™ 301 Adds Compass, Altimeter
to Pocket-Sized GPS Family
OLATHE, Kan. — Garmin® International Inc., a unit of Garmin
Ltd. (Nasdaq: GRMN), today announced that the company is extending
its new Geko GPS product line to include a new sensor-equipped
navigation device, the Geko
301. The unit combines the reliability
of GPS navigation with an electronic compass and a barometric
altimeter in a compact, waterproof package.
"
The Geko 301 is especially fitting for serious hunters and hikers
that are conscious of every ounce and every inch of their backpack," said
Gary Kelley, Garmin's director of marketing. "But
this GPS device is also for recreational users, because it’s
easy to use, affordable, pocket-sized and packed with fun outdoor
games."
Featuring only five buttons and user-friendly menus, the Geko
301 simplifies navigation. Its WAAS-enhanced GPS capabilities
show users precisely where they are, where they’ve been
and where they’re going.
In addition, the Geko 301 boasts an electronic compass and
barometric altimeter. The compass points trekkers in the right
direction — even
when they’re standing still — and steers them back
on course when they’ve strayed from a particular path.
The altimeter serves two primary functions. First, hikers get
a stable reading on their elevation, plus a digital readout of
such data as ascent and descent rate, total climb distance and
maximum elevation. Second, the 12-hour pressure-trend tool allows
the user to anticipate changing weather conditions.
The Geko 301 also features Garmin's patent-pending GPS
games, including a unique geolocation game that takes advantage
of the device’s GPS and electronic compass features. In
this game, users dodge and blast virtual meteors that are speeding
toward them. The game can even be played indoors, relying solely
on the compass function. Like other Garmin geolocation games,
it offers three levels of difficulty and gets progressively more
challenging at higher levels.
Following in the footsteps of the Geko
101 and Geko 201 released
earlier this year, the Geko 301 is among the smallest, most
lightweight and waterproof GPS devices on the market. Physically,
the Geko
301 is an earthtone gray and has the following specifications:
- Positional accuracy: Three meters or less with WAAS
- Size: 3.9" (H) x 1.9" (W)
x 0.96" (D)
- Weight: 3.4 oz. (with batteries)
- Screen Size: 1.8" (diagonal)
- Screen Resolution: 100 (H) x 64
(W) pixel count
- Battery Life: 9 hours (typical use)
on two AAA batteries
- Waypoint/Route storage: 500/20
- Automatic track storage: 10,000 trackpoints and 10
saved tracks
- Waterproof Construction: Submersible for 30 minutes
in one meter of water (IPX-7 standards)
The Geko 301 is expected to be available in July 2003 at a suggested
retail price of $246.42.
