Garmin®
Announces a Simple Way to Keep GPS Datacards Current
Skybound
Datawriter from Jeppesen®Æ updates your panel mount Garmin
GPS with the greatest of ease
OLATHE, Kan.
Garmin International, the leading manufacturer of navigation
and communication equipment for the aviation industry, has announced
a new way to update the datacards on your Garmin panel mount GPS
from the comfort of your laptop computer. Jeppesen's Skybound
Datawriter allows Garmin owners to download via the Internet.
The Jeppesen service can be used with any Garmin panel mount GPS
that uses a front loading datacard.
The updating
process is an easy one. Once Jeppesen customers have transferred
their current subscription service to the new web-based subscription
service, they simply log onto Jeppesen's NavData web page and
click on "service updates." The system will select the correct
update file and instruct the user to complete the download process.
From there, you insert the Skybound Datawriter into your laptop,
log into the Skybound software, press the start button and the
adapter finishes the update in about three minutes. Jeppesen will
also offer datacard updates via CD-ROM for those customers who
don't have access to the Internet.
"Garmin customers
are going to see this technology as a tremendous convenience,"
said Gary Kelley, director of marketing, Garmin International.
"Gone are the days of sending back expired cards and waiting for
your new card to arrive in the mail. I think by making the process
so easy, it will encourage pilots to update their databases more
frequently."
Individuals
who subscribe to the website update service will be billed yearly
by Jeppesen. The subscription fee will include the Skybound Datawriter
adapter. The Skybound Datawriter and web site service will be
available from Jeppesen in the fall of 1999.
Jeppesen
is based in Englewood, Colorado. The company is a subsidiary of
The Times Mirror Company and is recognized as the world's leading
supplier of flight information, supported by flight planning services,
aviation weather services, maintenance information and pilot training
systems. For more information, please contact Jeppesen at (303)
