Garmin® Hires Sales Manager to Market New GSM
Cellular Phone in Europe
Olathe, Kan. - Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd.
(Nasdaq: GRMN), a leading manufacturer of navigation, communication
and information electronics, is pleased to announce the hiring
of Peter Hawkins as Sales Manager for the European cellular market.
Hawkins will be based out of Garmin's office in Romsey, England
and will focus on GSM cellular sales in Europe, the Middle East
and Africa.
Garmin is currently developing a Global System for Mobile communications
(GSM) cellular telephone, combined with satellite navigation.
The NavTalk® II GSM will pair the features of a GSM cellular phone
with the proven ability of Garmin's 12 parallel channel GPS
receiver. The GPS component of this product will allow users to
see their location on a detailed basemap. In 1999, Garmin introduced
the worlds first GPS-equipped cellular telephone, the original
NavTalk, for the Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) market.
"There is a real need for emergency service providers and
other safety organizations in Europe, to have the type of life-saving
information that can be supplied by this product," said Gary
Kelley, director of marketing, Garmin International. "With
this phone, anyone will have the ability to transmit their location
to another NavTalk II GSM user and to other location-based service
companies. Garmin is excited about the business opportunities
this wireless product will obviously provide to our customers.
We are pleased that Peter has joined the Garmin team in an effort
to bring widespread exposure to this innovative product."
The NavTalk II GSM has Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) capability,
which allows users to obtain information via the Internet. In
addition, the product features a built-in international basemap
complete with cities, major roads, lakes, rivers, airports, coastlines
and highways.
Garmin's GSM cellular phone is expected to be available
in the fourth quarter of 2001.
