The Garmin GPSMAP 172 and GPSMAP 178 Sounder: Combining Performance, Reliability, Value
OLATHE, Kan./November 16, 2004/PR Newswire — Garmin International, Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (Nasdaq: GRMN), today announced the new GPSMAP® 172, and its combination chartplotter/sounder, the GPSMAP 178 Sounder – two full featured yet competitively priced marine units.
“We expect the GPSMAP 172 and GPSMAP 178 Sounder to be very popular among boaters and anglers who are looking for proven Garmin performance, but don’t need a color display,” said Gary Kelley, Garmin’s director of marketing. “These units have all of the same important, convenient, and easy-to-access functions as our top-of-the-line color chartplotters – but they sport a high-resolution monochrome screen that most any mariner can afford.”
The GPSMAP 172/178 both feature a high contrast 4.5-inch diagonal, 10-level grayscale, 320 x 320-pixel display. The units can be loaded with optional pre-programmed data cards or user programmed MapSource® BlueChart® or Recreational Lakes with Fishing Hot Spots® cartography – offering amazing details like depth contours, spot soundings, navaids, marinas, and other vital information for boaters. And thanks to a state-of-the-art processor, map redraw is significantly faster than previous models. Boaters can store up to 3,000 waypoints, 50 reversible routes, and 10,000 active track points – and store this information on data cards for transfer to a PC or another unit.
The GPSMAP 178 takes all of the features of the GPSMAP 172 and adds either a single-frequency 200 kHz transducer for inland waters or a dual-frequency 50/200 kHz transducer for offshore excursions. Boaters can choose dedicated full-screen map, full-screen sonar, split-screen map/sonar, compass, and navigational screens — with customizable digital data fields for each page.
Other specifications for the GPSMAP 172 and 178 include:
- 4.5-inch diagonal, 320 x 320 pixel, 10-level grayscale FSTN LCD with adjustable CCFL backlight
