Garmin® Named Exclusive GPS Provider for United Kingdom’s BMW and MINI Automotive Dealerships
ROMSEY, UNITED KINGDOM/January 12, 2006/PR Newswire — Garmin (Europe) Ltd., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (Nasdaq: GRMN), today announced an agreement
with BMW that makes Garmin the exclusive portable navigation supplier to the 308 BMW and BMW MINI automotive dealerships in the United Kingdom (UK).
Starting in January 2006, these dealerships will offer customers the StreetPilot® c310,
StreetPilot c320, StreetPilot c330, and nüvi 350,
in addition to product-related accessories and the GTM 11 traffic receiver.
“Drivers throughout the UK have recognized Garmin as the leader in GPS because of our years of experience, proven reliability, and diverse
product line,” said Sean Biddlecombe, Garmin’s director of international marketing. “We are very pleased to have been selected by
BMW as their portable GPS navigation supplier, and we look forward to working together to provide BMW and MINI customers with GPS navigation.”
The StreetPilot series and nüvi navigation systems offer a number of easy-to-use features for stress-free travel. Both product lines allow
the user to choose the fastest or shortest route to their destination via voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions that may be viewed with a
three-dimensional navigation view or a “bird’s eye” overhead view. The nüvi 350 also offers text-to-speech functionality
that allows the unit to audibly announce the name of upcoming streets and POIs – letting drivers keep their eyes on the road while navigating
through busy traffic. In addition, users may augment the pre-loaded maps with custom points of interest from third parties such as safety camera
locations. The StreetPilot and nüvi may be mounted very quickly to an automobile’s windshield by a suction-mount cradle. In addition to
regional detailed maps included with the unit, StreetPilots are equipped with a basemap of Europe, the Near East and Africa. Map data is provided
by NAVTEQ™ – a world leader in premium-quality mapping.
BMW and MINI customers selecting the nüvi will experience additional peace-of-mind and pleasure while traveling thanks to the nüvi’s
capabilities as a language translator, travel guide, MP3 player, audio book player, currency and measurement converter, a world clock, and a digital
photo organizer. The nüvi’s personal travel guide lets users perform tasks that make traveling more convenient such as browsing restaurant
menus and reviews, reviewing historical information about landmarks, translating unknown words or phrases, and converting foreign currency.
This announcement marks an expansion of Garmin’s existing relationship with BMW. Garmin navigational units are also a dealer installed
option on BMW’s award winning motorcycles.
